A word from the Director:

I met Dianne Lee through a referral by the Mezcla Media Collective, a hub that promotes over 600 women and non-binary filmmakers of color in the Chicago area.  Watching Dianne transform the footage, with its multiple layers of illustrations, enhanced text, and Crom’s ASL performance, was amazing! She integrated all the moving parts into a finely choreographed piece.

Through Dianne’s work, Calvin came to life with his little waves hello, his jumping up and down to make sure he could be seen from his spot in back of the barn, or, our favorite, his iconic face-first fall into an open book.  Dianne, in every sense, was the artist who got Calvin to fly.

Here’s what Diane had to say about the experience:

What was fun about working on this project?

It was fun tapping into my inner-child and asking myself what sort of movement, animations or little Easter-eggs would delight me while watching this video.

What was your favorite scene?

My favorite scene was the part when Calvin’s brothers and sisters were carrying him across the vista. It was like everything that Calvin imagined coming to life with the help of his family.

Why is the story important today?

I like that the story emphasizes the importance of fostering one’s own imagination and individuality while still leaving room to connect with others despite initial differences.
